The carved space in this reclaimed barn wood block makes home or a window for Blessed Mother's portrait. The portrait is a mixed media technique on acrylic tile, embedded in the barn wood. Above and below the portrait there is a built in mini "loom": nails from which the weaving was done and is kept in place.
For the weaving I used various fibers: cotton, jute, and linen. The barn wood- weaving combination, adds so much richness and warmth. I chose weaving because the cloth has a deeply enrooted meaning and functionality for all of us and also stands as a symbol for life itself or time space continuum. The repairs, gaps and breaks in the uniformity of the weaving tell a story, almost like a musical piece. Just like building life, a woven piece happens in time and just like in life we have warp as a starting point and as a constant. Weaving, as mark of human existence, can be a celebration of life. For this particular artwork the weaving stands for weaving prayers.
The block measures 10"x 8" x 3" deep, can hang on the wall or rest on a shelf. The barn wood block is beautiful from any angle and the natural element gives it a wonderful presence.
